Advice on Building Competence, Enhancing Communication, Enriching
Relationships and Overcoming Self-Defeating Patterns of Behavior

Ideas for the Shy Person

Participate actively in a conversation even if you’re nervous. Allow yourself the right to your own opinion, even if it’s not an expert opinion.

Fake it till you make it. Nobody has to know how much you’re shaking or how much you doubt yourself--unless you choose to let them in on your secret. You can pretend not to be afraid even if you’re frightened out of your wits. Doing so is half the task of learning how to overcome your fears.

In order to help you ‘fake it till you make it’, take a few slow, deep breaths. On each exhale, say something reassuring to yourself, like, ”I can do it”, "I'll be okay”, or “I’m proud of you”.
