Advice on Building Competence, Enhancing Communication, Enriching
Relationships and Overcoming Self-Defeating Patterns of Behavior

Ideas for the Compliant Person

Decide whose voice you want to pay attention to. If it’s a choice between one of your negative, fearful friends, or an upbeat, positive friend, the choice is clear! Make sure you give more attention to those who help you feel more confident, not more afraid.

Where you end your sentence makes a difference. Don’t let an “I can’t” statement stand on its own. Instead, expand your sentence by adding, “….but one thing I can do is” and complete the thought. If your mind goes blank, say “….but one thing I can do is to seek advice from someone who knows."

If you can’t find anybody to turn to at the moment, turn to music. Listen to a song that is reassuring to you. Many of Bob Marley’s songs fit the bill—with phrases such as “don’t worry,” “be happy” and “everything’s going to be all right.”
